Historical Society of East and West Baton Rouge records, 1776-1919 (bulk 1915-1919).

The records of the Historical Society of East and West Baton Rouge consist of correspondence, monthly programs, annual reports, lists of acquisitions, bills, and a few manuscripts donated by members (1915-1919). Also included are a clipping from the Baton Rouge Gazette (1828), a patriotic song by I.D. Wall and W.B. Clarke (1918), an article on General Joseph Walter (1919), and articles on military units in World War I, American sculpture, Fort Panmure, and Baton Rouge's Municipal Centenary. Within the Historical Society of East and West Baton Rouge Records are two separate series: the Philemon Thomas Papers and the Colonel George Morgan Papers. The former consists of 15 articles and memorandums on Philemon Thomas prepared by members of the Society to promote the erection of a memorial tablet. The latter are photographic copies of the commission of Colonel George Morgan as agent for Indian affairs signed by John Hancock, president of the Continental Congress (Apr 10, 1776), an undated letter from the Marquis de Lafayette to George Washington, and a letter of Thomas Jefferson to Mrs. Katherine Duane Morgan mentioning Colonel George Morgan's patriotism during the Burr Conspiracy (1822).
